Apple is about to make Physical Web access easier for iPhone users. Starting with iOS 11, iPhones are expected to be able to activate Near Field Communication (NFC) tags and launch QR codes to discover content and interactions, joining Bluetooth beacons as digital touch points for the Physical Web.

By adding these new digital touchpoints, Apple is helping to grow the ecosystem for the Physical Web, which benefits iPhone and Android users alike. The Physical Web is a virtual layer of digital content associated with places, things, and devices in the physical world. An array of digital touchpoints — QR codes, NFC tags, Physical Web beacons — serve as “gateways” to the Physical Web by utilizing the common URL. The more smartphone operating systems, mobile apps, and browsers that can discover nearby touchpoints, the easier it becomes for anyone to quickly access useful digital content during real, physical world moments.

Physical Web Bluetooth beacons

Deliver content to Android audience: Physical Web (Eddystone-URL) beacons primarily address Android users for now. They are visible through the Android “Nearby” feature and the Samsung “Closeby” application, which is built into the default Samsung Internet browser. In addition, they are visible on either Android or iOS through supporting apps, which can be easily enabled through our SDK.

Strengths/challenges: Physical Web beacons have the advantage that consumers can often see them without explicit intent. Nearby/CloseBy scans for beacons when people wake their phones and display notifications along with other passive notifications. However, both Bluetooth and Nearby/CloseBy must be on, which is enabled by default on some devices, and not on others, depending on the manufacturer. Google will also demote content that proves unpopular.

Forecast: Physical Web beacons provide what Google calls “bonus” engagement through Nearby, and can reach new audiences. However, in order to work like QR or NFC, where the user chooses to access content, Physical Web beacons need to be integrated into an app.  We believe PW beacons will gain most traction in this model, where the extended reach to the non-app crowd is just what Google calls it – a bonus.

Near Field Communication

For trend setters everywhere, Near Field Communication (NFC) technology is, without doubt, the next big thing. NFC technology uses radio waves over short distances to connect smart posters with smartphones and download everything from the tiny NFC chip or ‘tag’ in the poster with a single elegant swipe.

Many brands have been experimenting with different engagement technologies to close the gap between digital, social, online activities and the “real world”. The problem with such engagement vehicles is that they are virtually all app-based. But requiring an app to engage is a big barrier to entry for consumers. An app-based campaign depends on consumers already having the installed technology to be able to engage with the campaign.

Near Field Communication (NFC) removes this barrier and that’s why it will play the primary role in consumer engagement in the future. Consumers don’t need to install any apps or commit to any system to engage with NFC. It’s all built in. Touch your phone to something, consume content. That’s it.

How NFC Works

Basically, NFC facilitates data transfer between two ‘devices’ when placed a few centimetres apart – swiped or “tapped”. To explain further, this revolutionary wireless technology enables data exchange or information delivery to occur between any two NFC chips – they might both be installed within electronic devices. Two NFC enabled smartphones can instantly transfer data with a simple "tap" together. Or you could tap your NFC-enabled device to the distinctive NFC logo on a smartposter. And behind that logo is the unpowered, passive NFC chip, more commonly referred to as the ‘tag’ or ‘touchpoint’.

In essence you are connecting chips; chips that are embedded in devices or marketing collateral. These chips can be placed virtually anywhere and be encoded with almost any type of information or media.

You can deliver payment options, coupons, loyalty programs and brand apps, links to join interactive games, product information, social media connections and more. So, for example, when the user taps a smartposter with an NFC chip a browser opens up with a video, coupon, list of stores, directions to nearest store, special offer or whatever promotional offer a campaign manager chooses to deploy.
